YAKUPYAN: WE GET USED TO LIVING WITH AUTISM OVER TIME
The President of Special Children Education and Solidarity Association (ÖÇED) Parin Yakupyan delivered a speech at the event where attention was drawn to autism. In her speech at the South Campus, Yakupyan, as a mother, explained the process of meeting the diagnosis of autism to the participants. Noting that she had great expectations from her children as every mother does, Yakupyan said: “I was thinking of realizing my dreams that I could not realize in this life through my children. I gave birth to my children with those dreams. The biggest problems we face are discrimination, exclusion, contempt, and stigma. Families with autistic children are exposed to these all the time. It is thought that families experience the biggest trauma the day they receive the diagnosis, but over time we get used to living with autism. We keep a pace in our lives, but we cannot overcome social exclusion, which is the main cause of trauma, and this turns into a torment for us every day.”
