An event titled “Current Issues in the Middle East” was organized by the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. In the program moderated by Prof. Atilla Yayla, Istanbul Medeniyet University Faculty of Political Science Dean Prof. Özden Zeynep Oktav took part as a speaker. Oktav evaluated the last 20 years of political and social developments in the Middle East in the light of his own experiences. Oktav stated that there were regional and systemic fractures in the Middle East from the early 2000s to 2020 and added: “With the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, Türkiye followed policies towards Syria. However, there is also the influence of FETÖ and external interventions in this process. In 2012, Türkiye came closer to the USA, but FETÖ’s influence increased. In 2013, Türkiye-US relations became tense, and the influence of different actors began to be felt in the international arena. Before the start of the Ukraine-Russia war on February 24, 2022, Russian ships passed through Turkish waters. Many important events took place beforehand, such as major uprisings in Kazakhstan and the US withdrawal from Afghanistan. These events paved the way for October 7, 2023. What is happening in Gaza today is not spontaneous, but the result of pre-planned conditions. Understanding the Middle East requires understanding not only regional, but also international relations. Therefore, it is also important to understand China and Russia.”
