In a statement released by Istanbul Medipol University, the antidemocratic attitude against students participating in the Gaza protests that started at Columbia University in the US and spread to universities in different states was condemned.

The statement made by the university is as follows:

“For 6 months, university students have been raising their voices against the atrocities in Gaza and have been making peaceful efforts to protect human dignity. However, these innocent calls are met with violence in different parts of the world, disregarding human rights.

At universities from Columbia to Yale, New York to Harvard, students are speaking out for a ceasefire in Gaza, inviting the public to review relations with Israel, and calling on the world for a just peace.

While students are detained against calls for peace, universities are switching to distance education to prevent democratic protests. The attitude shown against the humanitarian and conscientious demands of students is a tyranny against academic freedom and fundamental human rights.

Giving in to such pressures damages not only free thought, but also the development of future leaders. We remind that the students who were detained, intimidated and whose right to education was taken away, not only opposed the brutality in Gaza, but also defended the most basic human rights.

We condemn the disproportionate response to the peaceful protests of university students as a blow to fundamental human rights and academic freedom.”
