ABOUT THE SUMMER COURSE EXAM

The Summer Course exam will be held ONLINE on 10.08.2023 and 11.08.2023 over Microsoft Teams. The first session of this exam, will be made on 10.08.2023, and the second entry will be made on 11.08.2023.

First Session: Reading, Writing
Second Session: Speaking

In the first stage of the exam, Reading and Writing will be shared with the students as two separate links. In order to be able to access this link, students must log in to their MEDIPOL STUDENT e-mail addresses with the extension @std.medipol.edu.tr before the exam. Students must enter the exam with their own student accounts. If another Medipol e-mail is open on the device to be used in the exam, it is necessary to log out and only the e-mail address of the student who will take the exam should be open on the device. In case of any inconsistency between the e-mail address of the student who took the exam and the e-mail address he logs into the system, the student's exam will be deemed invalid and his grade will be recorded in the system as "1".  It is recommended to log in from a computer to avoid any problems.

Before the exam, students can access their corporate e-mails with the extension @std.medipol.edu.tr, and if they have a technical problem, they should address their problems to [email protected] at least 2 days before the exam. They must be resolved by contacting the address. The Language School is not responsible for any problems that may arise due to not being able to access your account during the exam.

The speaking exam, which is the second session of the exam, will be held on 11.08.2023. For this exam, special channels will be opened for each student in the form of exam time and student name of Microsoft Teams teams created for the Summer Course exam. The student must have identification with him and present it clearly to the examiner.

Online Homework: 10%

Writing Portfolio: 30%

End of Summer Course Exam: 60%

End of Summer Course Exam Grading

Speaking: 60%

Reading: 20%

Writing: 20%
 

* Summer course assessment criteria (online assignments, portfolio studies, and end-of-summer course exam) will be carried out online.

* Summer Course passing grade is 75. In order for students to be successful in the summer course, they must score at least 75 points, taking into account the criteria mentioned above.

Integrated Assessment Guide for Students 

 

Day 1 

In the first phase of the exam, you will answer reading questions and you will write an essay after watching a video 

 

  • The exam starts with the reading part. You will receive a link for the reading text and the questions, you must read the text and answer the questions online. 

  • Next part is writing. You will watch a video twice and take notes. (Approximately 10 minutes in total.) 

  • The examiner will show you three writing prompts related to the video, you will choose one of the prompts and write an essay with references to the video. 

  • You must write a well-organized opinion essay with an introduction paragraph including a thesis statement, body paragraphs (minimum 2), and a concluding paragraph. 

  • You can use the notes you took to refer to the video in your essay. 

  • You will have 75 minutes to write your essay. 

  • Your essays will be checked on Turnitin for possible plagiarism and/or AI usage along with the video script. 

  • Students whose essays have plagiarism and/or AI percentage over 40% on Turnitin WILL NOT be able to take the speaking exam. 

Day 2 

In the second phase of the exam, you will defend your essay regarding following points, 

Warm Up 

  • In the warmup part the examiner will ask you a couple of questions about general issues. This part will take approximately 2 minutes. 

Monologue 

  • At the beginning you will summarize your essay briefly. (Approximately 1 minute) 

  • The examiner will only listen to your defence and they will not interfere.  

  • You must use target vocabulary and grammar topics from the exam content. Linking words from 2e/5e/10e must also be used in your speech. 

  • You must explain your thesis statement and each reason for your idea with details (e.g. examples, quotes, stats, facts etc.) 

  • You must conclude your defence by referring to your concluding paragraph and explaining why you think these are the best ideas. 

Dialogue 

  • In the dialogue part the examiner will ask you 2-3 questions regarding your essay and the video. 

  • Dialogue questions will be related to writing prompts, but they will not be same as the prompts. 

  • The exam will finish after the dialogue part. 

  • The whole exam (day 2) will approximately take 10-12 minutes.
