‘Artificial Intelligence in Visual Communication and Design Summit’ was held in cooperation with Istanbul Medipol University School of Communication and Navras Academy. Istanbul Medipol University Vice President Prof. Recep Öztürk, Dean of the School of Communication Prof. Ali Büyükaslan, faculty members, and students attended the summit held at the South Campus Conference Hall. At the summit, which was held for the first time in Türkiye with the contributions of Adobe, Nvidia, and Vancouver Film School, the impact of artificial intelligence on human productivity and how it will shape the visual communication and design industry were also discussed. The participants of the summit, which was held in two sessions, were also spectators to the challenge organized for the first time in Türkiye. The encounter between the computer, which designs and produces visuals with artificial intelligence on one side, and designer Selman Kıran on the other, was watched with interest.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DESIGNS FASTER, ARTIST KIRAN WINS
While the competition was held in three rounds, the artificial intelligence expert managing the artificial intelligence and the designer Selman Kıran were asked to design a ‘dolphin swimming in the desert’ in five minutes. Artificial intelligence outperformed designer Selman Kıran in terms of time. The winner was determined by the votes of the audience, and designer Selman Kıran was chosen as the winner because the visuals he designed were considered more creative.

PROF. ÖZTÜRK: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WILL BRING CHANGE
Delivering a speech at the summit, Istanbul Medipol University Vice President Prof. Recep Öztürk discussed what artificial intelligence has brought to the world of science. In his talk, Prof. Öztürk referred to the work of Distinguished Professor Cahit Arf titled “Can machines think and how can they think?” and said: “With the introduction and development of artificial intelligence into our lives, education, law, and medicine will change. No matter which field we look at, artificial intelligence will bring about change. These studies carried out under the leadership of our School of Communication will accelerate, strengthen, and become more widespread in the future. While artificial intelligence makes life easier, we should not ignore the issues that need to be considered. One of these is ethical rules. No matter what we do, we should not harm ethical values.”

PROF. BÜYÜKASLAN: THE MOST ESSENTIAL IS PEOPLE
Dean of the School of Communication Prof. Ali Büyükaslan said that technology-oriented developments significantly affect not only the future of human life but also today. Noting that the information transferred from yesterday to today offers important opportunities, Büyükaslan continued as follows: “The main thing in human-technology comparisons is the human. The skills, abilities, and productivity of artificial intelligence are also human production. We were talking about the impact of artificial intelligence in our lives yesterday. Today, we have started to feel, live, see, and talk about it. There are very painful events in the world. Technological developments, especially artificial intelligence, should not be a tool for these painful events.”

ASSOC. PROF. ERTEN: ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE CANNOT ACT ON ITS OWN
The School of Communication faculty member Assoc. Prof. İpek Fatma Erten said that artificial intelligence and humans will act together more frequently in the future. Emphasizing that artificial intelligence is frequently used in the field of design today, Erten added: “Artificial intelligence is very open to evolve in design. But it cannot act on its own. It has to act together with the designer. It cannot make its own decisions; it can act on the designer’s command. Therefore, we have a technology that will grow together with the designer. Our aim at today's summit was to explain how we can use the developing technology more efficiently and how we can turn the design processes in our favor.”

TIME CAPSULE TO BE OPENED IN 25 YEARS
At the end of the summit, participants tossed their technological information, expectations, messages, suggestions, articles, devices or memories of today into a time capsule that was specifically created for the event. The time capsule will be kept sealed at Istanbul Medipol University to be opened after 25 years.
