An event was held for the "World Prematurity Day" collaboratively by Istanbul Medipol University, Faculty of Health Sciences, Department of Nursing and Faculty of Communication, Department of Journalism. The program titled "One Drop of Breath: 'Skin-to-Skin Contact' Anywhere, Anytime" was held in the South Campus Conference Hall. The opening speeches of the event were made by International School of Medicine Dean Prof. Ayhan Taştekin and School of Health Sciences Faculty Member Prof. Sema Kuğuoğlu. In his speech, Taştekin talked about the difficulties of the treatment process for premature babies. Noting that it was very difficult to treat premature babies in the 1990s due to lack of equipment, Taştekin said: “Between the years of 1991 and 1996, it was very difficult to treat premature babies. The main reason for this was the lack of equipment and difficulties in access. The increase in artificial devices after 2000 has made our job easier as physicians. Being able to keep babies alive makes us the happiest people in the world. The World Health Organization defines babies born before the 37th week of pregnancy as 'premature'. Approximately 10% of all pregnancies may result in premature birth, either due to the mother or the baby, and sometimes for reasons that are not fully determined.”
